Band Of Unabashed Dreamers

Tags: Hairy Wolves | Mount Fabric

I've been a true fan of Mount Fabric for a long time. The guys from Manchester formed a band of "unabashed dreamers, purveyors of the melodic and abusers of all things classic", as they describe themselves, and they convince with remarkable, solid sometimes experimental rock. Now I got the chance to talk to them...

50K MUSIC: For all those who haven't heard of Mount Fabric yet (if there is anyone at all), please tell us something about you. Where do you come from, what are your roots?

Mount Fabric: We're from all over the country but we all ended up in Manchester one way or another. We make emotive, intense, complicated music.

50K MUSIC: You signed up to Hairy Wolf Records, a Manchester indie label, a while ago. Why do they shut up shop now?

Mount Fabric: They're just moving on to do other things. The guy who runs the label is very ambitious with lots of projects and he's still involved with us and what we're doing, but the label side is basically going to be dormant for the forseeable future.

50K MUSIC: How does this affect the band, how are you going to deal with this?

Mount Fabric: It doesn't affect us too much, we've been very hands on with this latest E.P. as it is, we record and produce all the songs ourselves, we design the packaging, etc. The fact that we won't be signed to a label after this E.P. comes out won't restrict our ability to make and release new music, but we will of course be looking for a new record label next year.

50K MUSIC: A while ago you were among the funding artists on SellaBand, if I remember that right. Would you consider to fan-fund your music again?

Mount Fabric: The great thing about fan-funding websites is that your music reaches people all over the world and you gain international fans, people who are genuine music lovers. For us at the moment, there isn't really anything we need funds for, because we're not touring and we can record and produce our music for free, so there's no great need to get involved in fan funding. When we start touring, then we might need to call upon the help of fans!

50K MUSIC: Your new EP „Threads“ will be released soon. Please tell us something about this.

Mount Fabric: We planned a trilogy of E.P.s, each with its own identity, and this is the second one. It features plenty of keys/synths (since we brought in a keyboard player) but it's certainly not a synth record, it's still guitar-driven rock at its core, just with lots of strange noises and sounds tangled up in it. It's much less polished than the last E.P., it sounds raw and natural, with the mistakes left in. Lyrically it's extremely intense, it's about mental illness, paranoia, mania, addiction, depression, etc. We don't really do happy songs!

50K MUSIC: Do you have any plans for gigs or touring some time soon?

Mount Fabric: We're always playing gigs in and around Manchester. We've reached the point now where we can be selective about which gigs we want to play, so we're playing lots of support slots for touring bands as they come through Manchester. Touring as a headline act isn't really cost effective for us just yet, but hopefully the time will come next year.

50K MUSIC: And finally: Anything you want your fans to know?

Mount Fabric: Yes, don't go and watch the new Twilight movie, it'll be rubbish.
