Sasha Daniel: My Heart Is In My Music

Thanks to Sasha for taking the time to answer (and sorry for being late with publishing the Q&A). Photo by Alexander Kinik. Published December 07 2014.

It's been a while since I've talked to Sasha but due to being a bit ill and really busy over the last weeks I haven't managed to publish it earlier (so some questions might not be as current as they should be). But there's still time to support her debut album project on Kickstarter. Enjoy reading ...

50K MUSIC: For a start, who are you?  Please tell us a bit about yourself.
Sasha: Hey! I am Sasha. I'm a Brooklyn based musician and i'm a serious traveler so nothing is ever set in stone. By this time next year I might be in Berlin or Tel Aviv or Colorado :) It seems like I'm constantly shifting my destiny. Or at least I want to believe I do, despite the knowledge that density is really not up for me to design. When I was 6 my (musician) parents took me, my brother and everything they owned and moved to israel. At the age of seven I started dancing and never left the stage since. Inspiration is my biggest friend, patience is my hardest lesson, gratitude makes me stronger and LOVE is everything to me. I'm an eternal optimist but at the same time extremely realistic and grounded. I still didn't figure out if this combination is a blessing or a curse. But it's who I am so i guess it's a blessing! Man, I feel like i just wrote a bio for a dating site :)

Lilabungalow are a German HutzeButz band hailing from Erfurt. They've just released the first single from their new album Peace To Gold. And they're funding a vinyl edition of this album on Visionbakery with a Christmas baking at the moment. I talked to the brain behind Lilabungalow, Patrick, about the campaign and their plans ...

Patrick: Lilabungalow are John Starlight, Caramel Diaz and Patricia Kies. In the moment we are living in Erfurt and Weimar in the heart of Germany. The musical roots are really divers. We have J.S. We featured The Subways back in March 2011 when they funded their album Money and Celebrity on Pledgemusic. Now they're back again for a pre-order campaign to get their upcoming self-titled album out in February next year. I talked to Charlotte about funding, touring and the plans for the next months ...

50K MUSIC: It's been a while since we talked last time, I guess it was back in March 2011. How has the world been treating you since then?
Charlotte: We had an awesome time touring the Money & Celebrity album, visiting places like South Africa & Russia for the first time & returning to places we love like Germany. This year we've been mainly working on the new album, but have also done quite a few festivals over the summer, including some of our favourites like Hurricane/Southside & Taubertal.

50K MUSIC: You've just started a new campaign on Pledgemusic to fund your upcoming album. Please tell us a bit about this Pledgemusic project.
Charlotte: We used Pledgemusic to fund the recording of our 3rd album, but this time round we're using it as a platform so we can release the 4th album how we want to. We had the idea of a split album release, with the first 6 songs available to download now if you pre order the album which will be released in February. Pledgemusic also gives us the freedom to offer fans some cool bundles, like a gig ticket & an album or a t shirt & an album.

Blaudzun: "I Believe An Artist Should Take Risks To Produce Art"

Thanks to Blaudzun for taking the time to answer my questions. Blaudzun will be on tour through Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands from Oct 23 and you can get yourself (+1) a spot on the guest list for a gig of your choice ... we give away 2x2 free tickets to those (two) who are the first to email to mario(at)50kmusic.com ... so hurry up and get your tickets. In May this year we've added Blaudzun's latest album Promises Of No Man's Land to our Just Discovered section. Now he's about to tour Europe over the next months. I've talked to him about the album, playing live and a bit about his view on music crowdfunding ...

50K MUSIC: I guess the first thing everyone will stumble over is the name Blaudzun. What do you have in common with a Danish cyclist from the 1970s?
Blaudzun: I have nothing in common with the guy except that we both love cycling. I'm a big cycling fan. I go to races and watch the classics and the big tours like the Tour de France. I fell in love with the sound of the word Blaudzun when I read about him and kept it as my stage name since. It's not a tribute to the rider.

50K MUSIC: What would you regard as your musical roots? Are there any musical role models?
Blaudzun: As a child I grew up with Dylan, Paco de Lucia, Johnny Cash, opera and lots of spiritual music. Later on I discovered The Beatles, Bowie, Nirvana and lots of hip hop and metal music. That was quite a defining period for me I guess.

We've featured Oskar Schuster when he funded his album "Sneeuwland" on Sellaband. Now he's on Pledgemusic with his current crowdfunding project - his third album to be released in May 2015. I talked to him about the Pledgemusic campaign, his upcoming album and what he's busy with at the moment ...

50K MUSIC: It's been about half a year ago when we talked last time. What have you been busy with since then?
Oskar: It was quite a busy time. Shortly after the release of my album „Sneeuwland" in March, I started to work on a piano solo EP which I released in July. I also made two music videos and was busy with promoting and distributing my music and piano sheets. As I do everything on my own, there’s a lot of other things I have to take care of apart from just creating and recording the music.

Introducing One Spark Berlin Music Creators (5): Frederik Knop

Published September 10 2014.

  by Mario

Belongings is the 5th music creator project of One Spark Start: Berlin I'd like to introduce today. I talked to Frederik (Freddy) Knop about what he expects from taking part at the festival ...

50K MUSIC: Who are you? Please tell us a bit about you.
Frederik: Hey, I am a Berlin based composer and mastering engineer. Before founding my own mastering studio in 2013 (Listeners Mastering) I was a musicologist phd candidate and lecturer, specialized on 20th century music and audio technology. I also support my family’s business Adam Audio whereever I can. Having released a bunch of experimental and beatrelated EPs with Mush Records (Los Angeles, CA) and Circle Into Square (Portland, OR), I currently work on a solo record called Belongings.

50K MUSIC: Where do you come from (musically)?
Frederik: I started listening to a lot of post-hardcore music (like Fugazi, Quicksand, The Promise Ring, Hot Water Music etc.) and 90s golden era hiphop (especially the native tongues) in my teenage years. A little later I got really obsessed with classical and contemporary experimental music by composers such as Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen and György Ligeti. It`s a pretty wild mix I guess.
