Simon O'Reilly: Contributing To A Beautiful Unique Album

If you're into instrumental music you will sure like the sound of Simon O'Reilly. Usually writing music for films and TV he's trying a whole new approach with crowdfunding his upcoming non-commercial album "Edge Of The Earth" on Fundit. I talked to him about the project, living in the west of Ireland and his further plans:

50K MUSIC: Who is Simon O'Reilly? Please tell us something about yourself. Where do you come from, what are your roots?
Simon: I am an instrumental musician and have my own recording studio I use primarily for writing music for film and TV. some of my latest work was to score 4 sections for a film that just is in the 2013 Sundance film festival. my past has been playing guitar live and producing many artists and bands. In the past 5 years I have concentrated solely on soundtracks. I am originally from Dublin but lived in Holland, Australia and England when I was growing up. I started playing music in Holland when I was a 12.

50K MUSIC: You're raising funds for your upcomimg instrumental album „Edge Of The Earth“ on Fundit at the moment. How did you find the way to crowdfunding?

Simon: because my album is instrumental non commercial and involves a lot of musicians I originally looked for funding from the Irish arts council, unfortunately the funding for these kind of projects is very limited in Ireland, it also appeared to me to mostly be aimed at classical music, so after a laborious failed attempt I licked my wounds and decided to try crowd funding.

50K MUSIC: What can we expect from this album?
Simon: The album is instrumental, it's written on acoustic guitar I have written parts for a string quartette, french horn, trumpet, trombone, drums, and a percussionist to accompany me. The music is going to have contemporary production and will be cinematic with dark & gritty string arpeggios pulsating around my acoustic guitar and uplifting brass melodies. I plan on recording the musicians playing my arrangements live, but also incorporating loops we will have recorded and processed. I would also like to possible incorporate a local choir.

50K MUSIC: You're at about one third of your target at the moment. What will you use the money for once you've finished the funding?
Simon: To record the album I need to employ 10 musicians playing different instruments, a string Quartette, 3 piece brass, Drums and percussion. As i have my own studio i am lucky so all the money is for musicians fees and manufacturing, duplication and artwork.

50K MUSIC: How do you convince your fans to fund?
Simon: I am offering the usual downloads hard copies etc.. But I am also offering studio time for some of the larger rewards.

50K MUSIC: How can we support you in reaching your target?
Simon: please spread the word and have my video featured on your site, it's beautifully shot and is different from your average vid!

50K MUSIC: Do you think crowdfunding could be a way to finance your music in the future
Simon: ill tell you after, I am not the greatest self promoter in the world and do find it a challenge, although I am now getting into it.

50K MUSIC: Back to your music - you're living in Co Clare, near to the Cliffs of Moher in Western Ireland. Your music seems to be inspired by this place very much.
Simon: as my video shows the music is very cinematic, you can't live hear without being inspired everyday by your surroundings.

50K MUSIC: You never missed living in Dublin?
Simon: yes! Gigs cinemas restaurants, but there are many humans there.

50K MUSIC: What are your plans for the next few months?
Simon: to start to record my album as well as a few films projects.

50K MUSIC: And finally: One thing you want your fans and supporters to know.
Simon: if they support this album they will be contributing to a beautiful unique album!
